Ayuda en Acción, Indorama Ventures, and IMG Group have introduced a major recycling and reforestation initiative, Bamagreen, in Bamako, Mali.
The project represents the inaugural effort under the Plastic2Prosperity programme, created through the adaPETation network by IMG Group.
The Bamagreen initiative seeks to improve plastic circularity while delivering socioeconomic advantages to at-risk communities.
This includes assistance for conflict-displaced individuals, women, and young people, showcasing the dual benefits of recycling for the environment and local economies.
At the core of the initiative is a pledge to inclusive development, with plans to involve approximately 1,950 individuals in stable employment.
A total of 40% of these participants will be women, concentrating on recycling and environmental education initiatives.
The project also expects to positively impact more than 100,000 individuals through citywide reforestation and waste awareness campaigns.
Ayuda en Acción Sahel regional coordinator Jean Christophe Gerard said: “This agreement reflects our commitment to sustainability and to creating opportunities for the most vulnerable populations.
“We are not only addressing an environmental problem but also providing economic opportunities for those who need them most.”
Bamagreen will also strengthen the recycling capabilities of local social enterprise ECOBUILD.
Furthermore, it will implement integrated environmental education to alleviate the consequences of unmanaged plastic waste, tackling the challenges of open dumping and deforestation in the area.
