UPM Specialty Papers has launched an improved version of its UPM Forte precoating technology across its glassine paper range.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The move targets cost and efficiency pressures in label production, where the economics of release liners are influenced by the substrate, silicone chemistry, energy use and overall production performance.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The enhanced UPM Forte provides a surface that enables faster silicone curing and strong anchoring on release liners, allowing labelstock manufacturers and siliconisers to prioritise different processing requirements.\u00a0<\/p>\n

UPM\u2019s technology supports a wider choice of silicone formulations. Depending on their goals, producers can use fast-curing, cost-optimised formulations with up to 50% less platinum or formulations that cure at temperatures up to 15% lower, both of which can reduce energy consumption.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n

Lower curing temperatures also help maintain paper strength and limit moisture loss, which can support downgauging to lighter, thinner paper.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Alternatively, faster curing can enable higher coater speeds to increase throughput.\u00a0<\/p>\n

For downstream operations, UPM Forte glassines deliver consistent high-speed release performance.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Reduced silicone transfer is also cited as improving print outcomes, particularly with sensitive pretreated filmic face materials.\u00a0<\/p>\n

UPM\u2019s updated technology is available in three grades covering established industrial shades and basis weights from 45 g\/m\u00b2 to 78 g\/m\u00b2.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Oscar Duarte, director label and release for EMEIA [Europe, the Middle East, India and Africa] and the Americas region at UPM Specialty Papers, stated: \u201cWe have seen rising energy costs and platinum prices in recent years. UPM Forte technology enables our customers to prioritise their specific production goals whether that\u2019s choosing more cost-effective silicone formulations, improving energy efficiency, or increasing production speeds.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

UPM Specialty Papers has more than 40 years\u2019 experience producing high-performance papers for packaging and labelling.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The company operates mills in China, Finland and Germany, employs 2,000 people and serves customers globally.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In October 2025, UPM Adhesive Materials revealed<\/a> a curated sample folder, presenting five label materials developed for wine and spirits packaging.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Each material in the folder is accompanied by a printed sample to demonstrate performance, with intricate artwork and heavy embellishment.\u00a0<\/p>\n
