Tetra Pak has launched a paper-based barrier for aseptic juice cartons, working with Spanish beverage company Garc\u00eda Carri\u00f3n.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The food packaging and processing company has introduced the new offering in several markets.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The barrier is being used first in the Tetra Brik Aseptic 200 ml Slim Leaf format for Garc\u00eda Carri\u00f3n\u2019s Don Sim\u00f3n line.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

This is the initial global application of a paper-based barrier in a juice portion carton, and the first time the material has been deployed in Spain.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The new package structure incorporates up to 80% paper, and the use of plant-derived polymers in the coatings takes the renewable share to 92%.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Verification by the Carbon Trust indicates a 43% reduction in carbon footprint compared with a conventional aseptic carton containing aluminium foil and fossil-based polymers.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The aluminium layer has been substituted with a renewable, paper-based barrier designed to shield the product from oxygen, light, moisture and bacteria, while maintaining shelf-life performance in line with current aseptic cartons.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Garc\u00eda Carri\u00f3n president Don Jos\u00e9 Garc\u00eda Carri\u00f3n stated: \u201cWe are proud to lead the way in sustainable packaging for\u202fthe juice category. For more than 135 years, Garc\u00eda Carri\u00f3n has been committed to responsible innovation and respect for the environment.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

According to Tetra Pak, the updated material can be collected and recycled where systems allow.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The higher paper content is expected to support recycling processes by increasing fibre recovery and preserving the quality of both fibre and non-fibre components.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The development is part of Tetra Pak\u2019s wider programme aimed at creating what it refers to as \u201cthe world\u2019s most sustainable food package\u201d, prioritising renewable or recycled inputs and a fully recyclable, low-carbon design.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
