Packaging Corporation of America (PCA) is shutting its converting plant in Richmond, Virginia, resulting in the loss of 110 jobs, effective June.<\/p>\n

In a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) filing, the Illinois-based containerboard producer said it will coordinate with state and local authorities in Virginia on support for employees who lose their jobs.<\/p>\n

The company also said it will assist workers interested in relocating to other PCA sites.<\/p>\n

Mark Romaniuk, deputy general counsel at the company, described the move as \u201ca difficult business decision.\u201d<\/p>\n

The notice said that hourly staff in production and maintenance roles at the Richmond facility are represented by the United Steel, Paper and Forestry, Rubber, Manufacturing, Energy, Allied Industrial and Service Workers International Union.<\/p>\n

PCA also referenced a satellite warehouse in North Chesterfield, Virginia, which employs six people.<\/p>\n

\u201cPCA intends to continue operating the warehouse and will engage in discussions with USW regarding ongoing staffing of the facility,\u201d the letter stated.<\/p>\n

The decision to close the Richmond plant follows downsizing in Washington state.<\/p>\n

Last year,\u00a0PCA\u00a0announced it would permanently take out of service the No. 2 paper machine and kraft pulping operations at its\u00a0containerboard mill in\u00a0Wallula, Washington,<\/a>\u00a0a step that led to 200 job cuts.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Alongside these reductions, the company has been investing in other parts of its network, including facilities it\u00a0acquired from Greif last year.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n

In late 2025, PCA closed\u00a0corrugated packaging plants<\/a>\u00a0in\u202fAllentown, Pennsylvania, and\u202fSalisbury, North Carolina, on 1 December and 19 December, respectively.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The closures affected 168 jobs \u2013 60 in Allentown and 108 in Salisbury.<\/p>\n
