{"id":4073,"date":"2024-11-29T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-11-29T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.packagingindustrynews.com\/?p=4073"},"modified":"2024-11-29T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2024-11-29T05:00:00","slug":"sway-umaro-secure-1-5-million-doe-grant-to-support-innovative-seaweed-solutions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.packagingindustrynews.com\/?p=4073","title":{"rendered":"Sway, Umaro secure $1.5-million DOE grant to support innovative seaweed solutions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<br \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>San Francisco Bay Area-based seaweed innovation startups Umaro and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.packagingstrategies.com\/articles\/104458-sway-unveils-first-scalable-seaweed-based-plastic-packaging-alternative\" id=\"\">Sway<\/a> have been awarded a Department of Energy (DOE) Mixed Algae Conversion Research Opportunity (MACRO) grant of $1,500,000 to innovate new processing techniques that upcycle alginate sidestreams from Umaro\u2019s seaweed protein production into Sway\u2019s seaweed-based bioplastics.<\/p>\n<p>As global pressures mount against fossil fuel extraction and resource-intensive industrial agriculture, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.packagingstrategies.com\/articles\/105225-seaweed-based-packaging-firm-bzeos-secures-seed-round-strategic-partnerships\" id=\"\">seaweed<\/a> has emerged as a promising new feedstock for sustainable bioplastics, biofuels, and other bioproducts. Seaweed is naturally abundant, fast-growing, and requires no fresh water, fertilizer, or arable land.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.packagingstrategies.com\/articles\/105124-2m-sustainable-packaging-technologies-earns-innovate-uk-smart-grant\" id=\"\">Seaweed<\/a> is known as a regenerative resource for its ability to nurture habitats as it grows, improving water quality and boosting biodiversity. And importantly, seaweed is plentiful in natural polymers, the molecular building blocks that can be transformed into bioplastic.<\/p>\n<p>Umaro is a pioneer in the development and commercialization of seaweed as a high-quality source of protein. Its flagship product, a plant-based bacon made with red seaweed protein, is now available in Whole Foods stores throughout California.<\/p>\n<p>Umaro recently developed an innovative process for separating protein from kelp \u2013 a ubiquitous brown seaweed \u2013 and is investigating sustainable uses for the polysaccharides left over from the process. That\u2019s where Sway comes in. With newly unlocked funding from the DOE\u2019s MACRO program, Umaro will work together with Sway, a company creating and commercializing home compostable, seaweed-based bioplastics. The collaboration will upgrade Umaro\u2019s alginate-rich polysaccharides into a product well-suited for Sway\u2019s innovative bioplastic products.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWith the right chemistry, seaweed has enormous potential to solve two problems at once: the need for sustainable materials and the need for sustainable proteins,\u201d<\/em> says <strong>Beth Zotter, CEO of Umaro<\/strong>. <em>\u201cUntil now, no commercial process could generate both of these products from the same piece of seaweed. We\u2019re eager to collaborate with Sway to apply our breakthrough technology to their industry-leading seaweed bioplastics, while improving the unit economics of both our products simultaneously.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Launched earlier this year, Sway\u2019s TPSea\u2122 is a first-of-its-kind pellet made entirely from seaweed and plants. Much like thermoplastic starch, TPSea\u2122 can be extruded on its own or combined with compostable polymers through various manufacturing techniques to create an array of customized products with boosted renewable content.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>TPSea\u2122 is currently used as the base of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.packagingstrategies.com\/articles\/105092-fashion-brands-take-bold-step-toward-compostable-seaweed-packaging-with-sway\" id=\"\">Sway Polybags<\/a>, which are being piloted with fashion brands prAna, Faherty, Florence, and Alex Crane and will be available for purchase via sustainable packaging supplier EcoEnclose by end of year. Looking forward to 2025, the Sway team will expand their product portfolio into new flexible packaging applications \u2013 a category representing approximately 40% of all fossil fuel-derived packaging \u2013 as well as new rigid formats.<\/p>\n<p>Alginate, the polysaccharide derived from brown seaweed, offers several functional benefits when incorporated into bioplastic formulations. Its unique gel-forming properties and high viscosity make it an excellent thickening, gelling, and stabilizing agent. These characteristics enhance the mechanical strength and flexibility of bioplastics, enabling compatibility with traditional plastic manufacturing equipment and diverse applications, including packaging, films, and coatings \u2013 all of which are possible to manufacture using Sway\u2019s TPSea\u2122 resin.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThrough diligent research and development, Sway plans to increase the accessibility of our seaweed-based materials by utilizing Umaro\u2019s surplus alginate to lower our overall price point,\u201d<\/em> says <strong>Julia Marsh, CEO and co-founder of Sway<\/strong>.<em> \u201cThanks to the support of the DOE, we also plan to enhance our material\u2019s performance to tackle especially challenging categories of necessary packaging for fashion, home goods, and food \u2013 helping to avoid plastic pollution in the process!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Among the exciting focus areas of the MACRO grant, support from the DOE will directly:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Enhance Sway\u2019s bioplastic formulations with improved mechanical and thermal properties.<\/li>\n<li>Create a scalable process for utilizing surplus alginate from seaweed protein production.<\/li>\n<li>Boost positive environmental impact through the expansion of renewable resources and home compostable materials.<\/li>\n<li>Increase accessibility to and adoption of bioplastics through a lowered product price point.<\/li>\n<li>Generate increased economic opportunity and job stability for seaweed-supplying coastal communities most vulnerable to climate change.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This project is part of $20.2 million distributed to 10 university and industry projects to advance mixed algae development for low-carbon biofuels and bioproducts, spearheaded by the U.S. Department of Energy\u2019s Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO) and Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management (FECM).
