In September 2024, California\u2019s Attorney General Rob Bonta filed a\u00a0lawsuit<\/a>\u00a0against the biggest corporations in the plastics industry, including ExxonMobil, over deceptive recycling claims. Bonta alleged that these chemical firms were intentionally deceiving the public about the efficacy of recycling while reaping billions in profits.<\/p>\n Now, ExxonMobil has struck back, filing a defamation lawsuit against the state of California and environmental advocacy groups like\u00a0Sierra Club<\/a>,\u00a0Surfrider Foundation<\/a>,\u00a0Heal The Bay<\/a>,\u00a0San Francisco Baykeeper<\/a>, and the Australian-based\u00a0Intergenerational Environment Justice Fund<\/a>\u00a0(IEJF) over statements regarding its \u201cadvance recycling technology.\u201d<\/p>\n In its federal lawsuit, filed in the Eastern District of Texas, ExxonMobil claims that \u201cTogether, Bonta and the US Proxies\u2014the former for political gain and the latter pawns for the Foreign Interests\u2014have engaged in a deliberate smear campaign against ExxonMobil, falsely claiming that ExxonMobil\u2019s effective and innovative advanced recycling technology is a \u2018false promise\u2019 and \u2018not based on truth,’\u201d as\u00a0reported<\/a>\u00a0by the Associated Press.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
