The Quebec Beverage Container Recycling Association (QBCRA) in Canada is set to implement phase two of the modernisation and expansion of the city\u2019s deposit return scheme (DRS) from 1 March 2025.<\/p>\n

Phase two will incorporate all plastic beverage containers from 100ml to two litres into the scheme, marking a significant advancement in the region\u2019s environmental protection agenda.<\/p>\n
The expansion is a continuation of the modernisation efforts that began in 2022 and is part of the city\u2019s broader strategy to recover five billion containers each year, aiming for a 90% recovery rate by 2032. The DRS, once updated, is expected to significantly reduce waste and increase recycling rates.<\/p>\n
For Qu\u00e9bec\u2019s residents, the updated system will further streamline the process of returning beverage containers, making it easier for them to participate in environmental conservation efforts.<\/p>\n
The inclusion of a variety of plastic containers such as water bottles, milk jugs, juice containers, soft drink bottles, and certain spirit bottles allows for a more comprehensive approach to recycling.<\/p>\n
The QBCRC emphasises that this measure not only simplifies the deposit system but also encourages citizens to engage in positive environmental actions by returning more containers.<\/p>\n
Looking ahead, the DRS will continue to evolve. The plan is to further expand the types of containers accepted to include glass and multilayer cartons by 2027.<\/p>\n
This move will ensure that Qu\u00e9bec\u2019s DRS remains aligned with international best practices for waste management and recycling.<\/p>\n
