Credit: Alba_alioth via Shutterstock.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"drop-cap\">Dutch company Avantium has signed a joint development agreement with Amcor Rigid Packaging USA, a division of Amcor, to advance the use of Avantium\u2019s plant-based polymer polyethylene furanoate (PEF), branded as releaf, in sustainable packaging solutions.<\/p>\n<p>            <!-- sponsored-whitepaper sponsored hidden sponsored-with-form --><\/p>\n<p>Avantium\u2019s releaf is claimed to be compatible with existing polyethylene terephthalate (PET) recycling streams.<\/p>\n<p>The material is said to offer enhanced barrier properties for extended shelf life, increased strength to minimise material usage, and lower processing temperatures, which can lead to reduced energy consumption compared to conventional plastics.<\/p>\n<p>With its lower carbon footprint, releaf will also help Amcor reach its net-zero goal by 2050.<\/p>\n<p>The partnership will explore the use of releaf in rigid containers across a range of sectors, including food, beverages, pharmaceutical, home, and personal care.<\/p>\n<p>Amcor has also agreed to a multiyear capacity reservation for PEF from an anticipated industrial-scale facility, based on a technology license from Avantium.<\/p>\n<p>This agreement provides Amcor with preferred access to PEF volumes from Avantium\u2019s future licensee network.<\/p>\n<p>Avantium has also developed a proprietary process technology to produce furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), the essential component for PEF.<\/p>\n<p>The company is set to launch what is claimed to be a world-first commercial FDCA plant in Delfzijl, Netherlands.<\/p>\n<p>This FDCA plant is seen as crucial for Avantium\u2019s licensing strategy, which involves selling FDCA and PEF directly to customers and offering technology licenses to industrial partners.<\/p>\n<p>Amcor research and development and programme management excellence vice-president Terry Patcheak said: \u201cThis partnership between Amcor and Avantium represents a significant step forward in advancing responsible packaging solutions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt combines Amcor\u2019s expertise in innovative packaging with Avantium\u2019s renewable and circular polymer releaf.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis partnership enhances our efforts to offer customers innovative, packaging that is better for products, people and the planet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last November, Avantium <a href=\"https:\/\/www.packaging-gateway.com\/news\/avantium-scgc-sustainable-plga\/\" target=\"_blank\">partnered with<\/a> SCG Chemicals to pilot poly(lactic acid co-glycolic acid) production, using carbon dioxide as a feedstock.<\/p>\n<p>            <!-- sponsored-whitepaper sponsored hidden sponsored-with-form --><\/p>\n<p>            <!-- Newsletter banner start --><\/p>\n<p><!-- <link rel=\"stylesheet\" href=\"\"> --><\/p>\n<div class=\"grid-container\">\n<section class=\"gdm-newsletter-banner__container\">\n<div class=\"grid-x gdm-newsletter-banner__wrapper-container gdm-newsletter-banner__wrapper-container--article\">\n<div class=\"cell large-9 gdm-newsletter-banner-info__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"gdm-newsletter-banner-logo__container\">\n                    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.packaging-gateway.com\/wp-content\/themes\/goodlife-wp-B2B\/assets\/images\/newsletter-new.svg\" alt=\"Email newsletter icon\"\/>\n                <\/div>\n<p><h3 class=\"gdm-newsletter-banner__heading wp-noreslt\">Sign up for our daily news round-up!<\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"gdm-newsletter-banner__sub-heading\">Give your business an edge with our leading industry insights.<\/h3>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- Newsletter banner end --><\/p>\n<footer class=\"article-footer\">\n                                <!-- article-actions start --><\/p>\n<p><!-- .gdm-article-actions -->                                <!-- article-actions end --><br \/>\n                            <\/footer>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.packaging-gateway.com\/news\/avantium-amcor-partner-releaf\/\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Avantium is set to launch a commercial FDCA plant in Delfzijl.
