Cutting down trees was framed as an act of ecological violence, something on par with the murder of an entire ecosystem. Deforestation was a slur.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After all, I was a part of the generation raised on<em> <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shelsilverstein.com\/9780060586751\/the-giving-tree-with-cd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The Giving Tree.\u00a0<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I was raised in the Southeast. Recycling was optional, and composting was for hippies. I never remember reusable bottles being a thing, just plastic.
