In response to strong demand for packaging-sustainability education, the <\/span>Institute of Packaging Professionals<\/a><\/span> (IoPP) is launching a <\/span>Fundamentals of Sustainable Packaging<\/a><\/span> course. It will be taught for the first time September 10 to 12, 2024, at <\/span>Printpack<\/a><\/span> in Atlanta.<\/span><\/p>\n

The course, and its timing are \u201cright on trend for what we were hearing from industry leaders that we interact with,\u201d says Jane Chase, IoPP\u2019s executive director, adding that they clearly indicated a need to train their teams on the fundamentals of sustainable packaging appreciate IoPP’s ability to “provide the material-agnostic take on the topic.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Developed in collaboration with IoPP\u2019s <\/span>Sustainable Packaging Technical Committee<\/a><\/span>, the course is comprehensive and immersive. The instructors are consumer packaged goods experts with a deep understanding of, and experience in, sustainable packaging.<\/span><\/p>\n

Course topics & details<\/h2>\n

Topics will include biodegradability and compostability; climate, with an emphasis on life cycle analysis; environmental and social governance, including extended producer responsibility (EPR); labeling; recycling; regulatory issues; and sustainability, including the circular economy and debunking sustainability myths.<\/span><\/p>\n

The training \u201cis comprised of instructor\/participant interaction and will include hands-on activities throughout the course \u2014 too many to list \u2014 ending with a tour of an Atlanta-based materials recovery facility on the final day of the course,\u201d says instructor Patrick Keenan, R&D principal engineer, General Mills, and co-chair of IoPP\u2019s Sustainable Packaging Technical Committee.<\/span><\/p>\n

Students who complete the course will receive 16 Certified Packaging Education (CPE) credits, which can be applied toward IoPP\u2019s Certified Packaging Professional (CPP) requirements.<\/span><\/p>\n

IoPP encourages members and non-members alike to <\/span>register<\/a><\/span> for the course. \u201cWe\u2019re right on track to fill the limited seating \u2014 35 participants \u2014 for the inaugural offering,\u201d Chase says. \u201cWe are capping attendance at the session at this number to ensure that there is an opportunity for participants to interact with the instructors and each other.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
