UPM Specialty Papers will invest more than \u20ac10m ($11.3m) for the modernisation of its Tervasaari mill located in Valkeakoski, Finland, to enhance the mill\u2019s capacity.<\/p>\n
The modernisation project encompasses a rebuild of the paper machine drying section and an upgrade of the related steam system.<\/p>\n
Scheduled for completion at the end of 2026, the project is expected to improve the production stability of specialised products such as glassines and flexible packaging papers.<\/p>\n

This investment underscores our commitment to serving customers in the label, tape and industrial value chains as well as packaging.\u201d<\/p>\n
This initiative follows on the heels of approximately \u20ac20m invested in recent years to improve the energy efficiency of the Tervasaari mill. Notably, a new electric boiler was installed in April 2023.<\/p>\n
The mill is transitioning from fossil fuels to electric boilers for its heat and steam production. This shift aligns with UPM\u2019s 2030 goal to cut carbon dioxide (CO\u00b2) emissions from fuels and purchased electricity by 65%.<\/p>\n
In Finland, the adoption of new electric boilers is projected to reduce CO\u00b2 emissions by approximately 50,000 tonnes (t) per year.<\/p>\n
UPM Specialty Papers has an extensive portfolio of glassine papers and packaging papers, catering to a variety of applications such as labels, double-sided tapes, and other industrial uses.<\/p>\n
The company\u2019s flexible packaging range includes fibre-based barrier, barrier base, and C1S packaging papers.<\/p>\n
The Tervasaari mill has an annual capacity of 300,000t.<\/p>\n
