RDM Group, a producer of recycled cartonboard, has introduced Multiboard Barrier, a polyethylene-coated cartonboard designed to meet performance demands while tackling environmental issues.<\/p>\n

The new product aims to provide a sustainable solution for various packaging needs.<\/p>\n

The company highlighted that its PE-coated boards are suitable for hygroscopic products, which require moisture protection.<\/p>\n

Its applications include packaging for frozen food items, such as fish and cakes, as well as pet food boxes.<\/p>\n

RDM Group claims that its paper-based products significantly reduce the plastic content in high-performance packaging.<\/p>\n

The PE layer in the Multiboard Barrier can be as thin as 3-5% of the overall structure, depending on the chosen grammage and coating, the company added.<\/p>\n

The thermoplastic nature of polyethylene offers heat sealability, allowing the board to function as a \u201chot glue.\u201d<\/p>\n

This feature provides an advantage over non-heat sealable alternatives that rely on adhesive-based lamination, which complicates recycling efforts, according to the company.<\/p>\n

Manufactured at RDM Group\u2019s Fiskeby mill in Sweden, the Multiboard Barrier is made with 100% recycled fibres.<\/p>\n

It is claimed to be fully recyclable and can be processed alongside other paper-based products, boasting a recycling rate of 83%, more than twice the rate of plastic packaging.<\/p>\n

The Multiboard Barrier is claimed to align with the EU\u2019s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR).<\/p>\n

RDM Group chief innovation and sustainability officer Krzysztof Krajewski was quoted by various media houses as saying: \u201cAt RDM Group, we believe that rethinking plastic for today\u2019s world doesn\u2019t mean eliminating it, but using it in a smarter more circular way.<\/p>\n

\u201cMultiboard Barrier is a solution that integrates minimal plastic use into a fibre-based board structure, optimising both functionality and recyclability.\u201d<\/p>\n
