Credit: SIG.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"drop-cap\">South Korea\u2019s Seoul Dairy Cooperative (SDC) has begun packaging its products in Swiss packaging company SIG\u2019s aluminium-layer-free, full\u2011barrier aseptic carton packs, starting with its organic white milk.<\/p>\n<p>The packaging uses SIG Terra Alu-free + Full barrier \u2013 the world\u2019s first full-barrier aseptic carton material without an aluminium layer.<\/p>\n<div class=\"in-article-premium-insights mobile-useragent-scalar\">\n<section class=\"gms-b2b-marketing\">\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.packaging-gateway.com\/wp-content\/themes\/goodlife-wp-B2B\/assets\/images\/GMS-logo.svg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n<h4> Discover B2B Marketing That Performs <\/h4>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\tCombine business intelligence and editorial excellence to reach engaged professionals across 36 leading media platforms.\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.globaldatamarketingsolutions.com\/\" class=\"gms-find-out-more\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tFind out more <span><svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" width=\"13\" height=\"9\" viewbox=\"0 0 13 9\" fill=\"none\"><path fill-rule=\"evenodd\" clip-rule=\"evenodd\" d=\"M11.685 4.5548L1.25586 4.5548L11.685 4.5548Z\" fill=\"white\"\/><path d=\"M11.685 4.5548L1.25586 4.5548\" stroke=\"white\" stroke-width=\"1.03145\" stroke-linecap=\"round\" stroke-linejoin=\"round\"\/><path d=\"M7.85693 0.918855L11.9827 4.5731L7.85693 8.33789\" stroke=\"white\" stroke-width=\"1.03145\" stroke-linecap=\"round\" stroke-linejoin=\"round\"\/><\/svg><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<p>The material provides the same full-barrier protection as standard aseptic cartons and affords the same shelf life of up to 12 months.<\/p>\n<p>SIG\u2019s alu-free full-barrier solution replaces the conventional three-material aseptic carton structure \u2014 paper, polymers and an aluminium layer \u2014 with two main raw materials: Forest Stewardship Council trademarked and certified paperboard and polymers, substituting the aluminium with an ultra-thin polymer layer.<\/p>\n<p>The move is presented as having substantial environmental benefits.<\/p>\n<p>Although aluminium represents only 5% of a standard aseptic carton\u2019s weight, SIG states it contributes roughly 25% of the carton\u2019s carbon footprint.<\/p>\n<p>Under current South Korean environmental regulations, the new packaging is officially labelled recyclable.<\/p>\n<p>The aseptic cartons are the first in South Korea to achieve a recyclable grade from the country\u2019s recyclability grading system, meaning they can be collected and recycled alongside chilled gable-top cartons.<\/p>\n<p>SDC president and CEO Jinsup Moon stated: \u201cBy adopting SIG Terra Alu-free + Full barrier, we are taking a significant step toward enhanced recycling and supporting Korea\u2019s drive for a circular economy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In May 2025, SIG revealed the commercial launch of the Terra Alu-free + Full barrier solution for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.packaging-gateway.com\/news\/sig-introduces-full-barrier-solution\/?utm_source=&amp;utm_medium=16-118006&amp;utm_campaign=&amp;cf-view\">multi-serve aseptic cartons<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In July, the company introduced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.packaging-gateway.com\/news\/sig-launches-aseptic-carton-packs\/?utm_source=&amp;utm_medium=16-120363&amp;utm_campaign=&amp;cf-view\">one-litre aseptic carton packs<\/a> made from Terra Alu-free + Full barrier material without an aluminium layer.<\/p>\n<p>SIG first introduced an aluminium-layer-free material for aseptic cartons in 2010 with SIG Terra Alu-free and has since sold over four billion packs without an aluminium layer.<\/p>\n<p>With the Terra Alu-free + Full barrier variant, SIG has expanded its alu-layer-free options for use with oxygen-sensitive products such as fruit juices, nectars, flavoured milk and plant-based beverages.
