Inside Coca-Cola’s packaging overhaul

Coca-Cola has long been a dominant force in the beverage industry, but in recent years, it has increasingly turned its focus towards sustainability. As part of its ambitious “World Without Waste” strategy, the company has pledged to ensure 100% of its packaging is recyclable by 2025 and to incorporate at least 50% recycled material into its packaging by 2030.

These commitments mark a significant shift in corporate responsibility as global concerns over plastic waste continue to rise.

Advancing recycled packaging solutions

One of Coca-Cola’s most notable achievements in this initiative is the rollout of bottles made entirely from 100% recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET), excluding caps and labels.

This shift began in select markets and has since expanded globally. In 2023, Coca-Cola Canada transitioned all its 500mL sparkling beverage bottles to rPET, reinforcing its commitment to reducing the use of virgin plastic.

Similarly, in the United States, Coca-Cola launched 13.2oz bottles made entirely from rPET, which are not only more sustainable but also feature the prominent “Recycle Me Again” message to encourage consumer participation in recycling efforts.

Encouraging consumer participation

Beyond redesigning its packaging, Coca-Cola is actively working to change consumer behaviour through awareness campaigns and messaging directly on its bottles.

The “Recycle Me Again” tagline, which appears on many of its new rPET bottles, serves as a constant reminder for consumers to dispose of packaging responsibly. This initiative aligns with the company’s goal to collect and recycle a bottle or can for every one it sells by 2030.

By placing recycling front and centre, Coca-Cola aims to increase global recycling rates and reduce the volume of plastic waste ending up in landfills and oceans.

Challenges and future goals

Despite significant progress, Coca-Cola still faces hurdles in its sustainability journey. Recycling infrastructure varies widely across different countries and regions, making it difficult to guarantee that all packaging is properly recycled.

The company has acknowledged these challenges and is collaborating with governments, NGOs, and industry stakeholders to improve recycling systems and waste collection networks.

Looking ahead, Coca-Cola is not only focusing on increasing recycled content but also exploring innovative alternatives to traditional plastics. Trials of plant-based plastics and paper-based beverage containers have already begun, hinting at a future where packaging could be even more sustainable.

As the 2025 deadline approaches, Coca-Cola’s “World Without Waste” strategy will continue to be tested. The company’s ability to meet its ambitious sustainability targets will depend on advancements in packaging technology, improved recycling infrastructure, and sustained consumer engagement.

Nevertheless, its efforts thus far indicate a strong commitment to reducing its environmental footprint and setting a precedent for the beverage industry at large.
