The expansion is designed to serve food producers and retailers across Europe with packaging that addresses shelf visibility, sustainability and regulatory compliance.

It enables the company to provide a comprehensive packaging line-up, covering corrugated and solid board formats in addition to its existing flexible packaging offering.

The move is in response to changing consumer expectations, new European Union (EU) requirements and a demand for sustainable, convenient and visually distinctive packaging.

The expansion reflects trends such as lightweighting, smaller portions, retail-ready packaging and demand for fibre-based materials.

The range targets food segments including fresh produce, meat, poultry, seafood, dairy, frozen food, snacks, confectionery and beverages.

Solutions span ventilated trays, stackable boxes, leakproof packaging, shelf-ready displays, multipacks and e-commerce formats for online grocery fulfilment.

Mondi’s solutions are designed to be fully renewable or recyclable in line with EU directives such as the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, supporting circularity and meeting eco-design requirements for private-label and branded products.

The integration of Schumacher Packaging’s operations has expanded Mondi’s manufacturing footprint in Europe, adding production sites and regional supply capacity.

Development work is supported by accredited food safety and performance laboratories and ThinkBox innovation centres where technical teams work with customers on design and process improvements.

Mondi Corrugated Solutions chief operating officer Paulus Goëss said: “The food sector is undergoing rapid change, with sustainability targets, EU legislation and shifting consumer behaviours all driving new requirements for packaging. By expanding our portfolio, we can help customers respond to these trends with solutions that are lighter, more sustainable and optimised for shelf appeal.”

In October 2025, Mondi introduced a new banana box packaging design that uses 40% recycled fibre and is up to 10% lighter than conventional boxes while maintaining durability.

The packaging was developed through a partnership between Mondi, Ecuadorian banana exporter Incarpalm, trading partner Europcell and a European importer.
