Coveris is offering fully recyclable, paper-based packaging for US confectionery products of UK-based snacking giant pladis Global.

Coveris has developed pre-made paper block bottom bags that will serve as secondary packaging for pladis’ confectionery brands in the US.

The new offering replaces the McVitie’s biscuits and Godiva chocolate brands owner’s non-recyclable oriented polypropylene/paper composite bags.

The new paper-based bags have been designed in line with CEFLEX circular design guidelines so that they can be collected, sorted and recycled through established paper recycling streams.

The structure is also aligned with EU regulatory requirements, including the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, with a focus on reducing waste and pollution.

The bags meet the Flipz pretzels maker’s operational requirements by balancing machine performance, material strength and print quality.

Coveris global account manager with responsibility for pladis Group, Noah Hilt, stated: “By combining our expertise in flexible paper technology, printing and converting, we have created a packaging solution that meets the highest visual and functional standards while fully aligning with circular economy principles – with the next generation already on the horizon.”

The design aims to overcome common technical issues linked to paper packaging, such as cracking and fibre break in side gusset areas, which can impact visual consistency.

The rollout in the US followed joint technical trials and process validation.

The revised structure is intended to limit fibre break, helping to protect printed artwork during transport and handling.

The bags are designed to remain upright on shelves through increased stiffness and dimensional stability, while a heat-sealable top fold allows for secure sealing and compatibility with pladis’ existing packing lines.

A pladis North America spokesperson added: “We have been searching for a recyclable paper pre-made bag that meets our performance and quality expectations. Coveris’ pre-made block bottom bag impressed us with its combination of sustainability, visual appeal, and technical reliability. It allowed us a seamless change process and provides the look and quality our brands require.”
