Trader Joe’s Enters the Prebiotic Soda Wars With a $1.99 Retro Can

Trader Joe’s has entered the prebiotic soda wars. At a moment when the category is already frothy with hype, capital, strong opinions, and supposedly good-for-your-guts bacteria, the grocery chain debuted new prebiotic sodas, Strawberry Vanilla and Cherry Cola.

The seemingly endless good-for-you soda wars are driven by consumers who want nostalgia without the nutritional guilt. Prebiotic sodas promise gut health benefits by feeding beneficial bacteria, while delivering the ritual and flavor profile of a classic soft drink. Brands like Poppi and Olipop helped turn what once was a wellness niche into a mainstream beverage aisle staple. And Poppi, which was recently acquired by Pepsi for $1.65 billion, is a clear signal that functional soda is officially its own category rather than a spinoff.

Of course,Trader Joe’s has a bit of a reputation as a copycat.
