Costco Addresses Packaging Peeve That’s Had Members Squawking For Years

Costco members tend to rave about most of the club’s products for their quality and value, but no store can go 10 out of 10 on everything. In Costco’s case, one big gripe among shoppers has been the packaging for Kirkland Signature boneless, skinless chicken breasts.

Chicken breast is a popular protein choice thanks to its versatility, and buying it skinless and boneless should be super convenient. However, the way Costco packaged its chicken breasts in connected pouches made them difficult to open. One can see why the bulk retailer might have chosen this approach—to package the chicken breasts, it can lay the pieces on one side of plastic film, then seal the front film, then seal the pieces in between. While pragmatic, this meant members would have to perform packaging surgery at home, and, more often than not, taking scissors to the packs would result in raw chicken juice everywhere.

Spilling raw chicken juices all over isn’t just a mild annoyance; it can also lead to cross-contamination if it gets on surfaces where other ingredients will be placed or cut. So, making individual Kirkland Signature chicken breasts easier to separate also makes cooking them safer.
