Valmet launches bio-based press roll covers with lifecycle data

Valmet has launched a new line of press roll covers designed to reduce dependence on fossil-based materials in the pulp and paper industry.

The Finnish technology and automation supplier said its Bioneer press roll covers are produced using recycled, renewable and other bio-based inputs.

The use of these materials is intended to support both Valmet and its customers in cutting the use of fossil resources in production.

According to the company, the Bioneer range is the first series of press roll covers to be delivered with product-specific lifecycle assessment (LCA) data.

This is meant to give paper and board producers a clearer view of the climate impact associated with each product.

Valmet said that the Press Roll Cover PF Bioneer can provide up to a 12.2% reduction in cradle-to-gate CO₂ emissions compared with conventional alternatives.

The emissions reduction is achieved through the use of REDcert-certified renewable and recycled raw materials, applied via a mass balance approach.

Valmet roll covers and maintenance global product manager Sanna Junttonen said: “With the transparent LCA data, we can help our customers compare the climate impact of different products, make informed decisions, and demonstrate measurable progress towards their climate targets.”

Valmet roll covers and maintenance global technology manager Ulla Kanerva added: “With the Bioneer roll covers, we can offer both high-performance technology and verified climate impact data.”

The product launch follows a series of orders in Valmet’s paper business last year.

In November 2025, the company was chosen to modernise a paper machine and deliver two winders for Wuzhou Special Paper’s facility in Hubei, China. The start-up of the rebuilt machine is scheduled for early 2027.

While financial details were not disclosed, the project will convert a recently relocated machine to produce recycled fluting and liner grades, extend the operating life of the original Valmet-supplied unit, and increase its output.

In August 2025, Valmet secured an order to supply an advanced automation system to Klingele Paper & Packaging’s Weener paper mill in northern Germany. The solution is aimed at improving resource efficiency at the site.
