Henkel Releases Cold Seal Solution for Barrier-Coated Paper Packaging

With Loctite Liofol CS 7106 RE, Henkel is bridging a technological gap. It is the first Cold Seal solution specifically designed for barrier-coated paper packaging. Development for such solutions is driven by the growing trend towards paperization, as paper-based packaging solutions are gradually gaining traction as an alternative to plastic ones. Strict regulatory requirements on packaging recyclability, such as the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), and increased customer interest in sustainable packaging alternatives are the main factors contributing to this switch. According to a recent GlobalData industry report, more than 70% of global consumers consider recyclable packaging essential or desirable.

As the first Cold Seal coating in the Henkel portfolio to be formulated specifically for barrier-coated paper, Loctite Liofol CS 7106 RE ensures process-reliable production of recyclable packaging structures, creating a secure seal without heat exposure. It thereby supports manufacturers to transition toward sustainable packaging concepts. The product is not only suitable for applications in the snack and confectionery segments but also for collection cards or other secondary packaging that previously required plastic structures. The solution is part of Henkel’s RE range; a product family of adhesives and coatings specifically developed for recycling-compatible packaging design that verifiably supports the reutilization of materials.

Durable seal with recycling compatibility

Loctite Liofol CS 7106 RE provides a strong, permanent seal with exceptional adhesion properties and consistently high-quality application, even at high line speeds. The Cold Seal coating is press-ready, ensures stable application on a wide range of paper grammages, and boasts excellent ageing properties. It also tolerates typical migrants from paper substrates, thus preventing process-related fluctuations in performance. Its recycling compatibility has been verified by an accredited certification institute, and the product is compatible with mechanical paper recycling, which is a decisive advantage in the light of current and future regulatory requirements.

Process reliability and heat-sensitive product segments

For manufacturers, the new solution guarantees consistent Cold Sealing performance on barrier-coated paper structures with hassle-free processing on existing high-speed lines. This is particularly important in the snack, ice cream and confectionery industries, where packaging contents are sensitive to heat and the Cold Seal technology is essential. As sealing is achieved without thermal exposure, product quality and aroma are preserved while the mechanical stress on packaging material remains minimal. When combined with modern barrier systems, this process produces functional and recycling-compatible paper structures.

“With Loctite Liofol CS 7106 RE, Henkel delivers attested Cold Seal performance on barrier-coated paper and, consequently, packaging solutions that meet the requirements for a circular economy and the high demands for product safety, and process stability,” explains Cagri Turkmen, Market Strategy Manager Flexible Packaging at Henkel.

In the context of the PPWR, recyclable paper packaging is increasingly gaining in strategic importance. Loctite Liofol CS 7106 RE directly contributes to this strategy, as this Cold Seal coating has been proven not to impair the recyclability of barrier-coated paper structures. For brand owners and packaging manufacturers, this complete material recirculation creates a solid basis for meeting future regulatory requirements and implementing high-performance, ready-to-market packaging designs.
