Henkel unveils new paper packaging coating products

Henkel Adhesive Technologies has widened its paper coatings offering with water-based barrier and heat-seal products for paper packaging.

The additions are intended to improve the performance of paper-based packs and support ‘design for recycling’ efforts.

Henkel said the heat-seal coatings are aimed at paper packaging uses where plastic has commonly been used.

These include packs with sealed joins such as bags, sachets and mailing packs for small goods, including screws and toys, as well as packaging for dry food and hygiene items.

On appropriate paper grades, the coatings allow sealing through heat. Henkel said the products are designed to work at lower temperatures and on fast production lines.

The company added that the coatings are repulpable, suitable for recycling systems and cleared for food contact under US and EU rules.

Henkel also offers a version with a UV tracer for application checks and quality control.

The barrier coatings in the range are intended to help protect packaged paper contents. Depending on the application, these coatings can give paper packaging resistance to grease, water and moisture, while also supporting heat sealing.

Henkel said such coatings can extend the use of paper into areas that have often relied on plastic or multi-layer composite materials. It noted that the portfolio has been expanded and adjusted to meet demand for primary and secondary packaging applications.

According to the company, the products can be used within standard coating and packaging operations and are repulpable and suitable for recycling.

Henkel Adhesive Technologies Europe paper packaging market strategy manager Arianna Savini said: “With our expanded paper coatings portfolio, we enable paper-based packaging that is ready for current market demands.

“By providing the necessary barrier and sealing properties for numerous applications in the food and non-food sectors, we are not only supporting the shift towards recyclable packaging solutions but also helping customers to achieve their sustainability targets within the scope of the PPWR [Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation].”

In February, Henkel introduced Loctite Liofol CS 7106 RE, a cold-seal product for barrier-coated paper packaging.
