Sappi to Showcase Sustainable Tea Packaging at interpack

At this year’s interpack, Sappi will be highlighting its latest innovations in sustainable tea envelope packaging, showing how fiber-based solutions are transforming a critical element of the tea product experience.

Tea envelopes play a vital role in protecting product quality, preserving delicate aromas and delivering the first tactile interaction between brand and consumer. At interpack, Sappi is presenting a comprehensive range of paper-based envelope solutions designed to meet both performance needs and growing sustainability expectations. Visitors to the Sappi stand can explore a variety of flexible packaging paper solutions for tea envelopes, including crimped formats, heat-sealed sachets and translucent variants.

Crimped tea envelopes represent a proven and efficient packaging format, widely used for individually wrapped tea bags. At interpack, Sappi is showcasing specially engineered uncoated paper solutions ‘Leine Teapack’, designed to deliver strong crimping performance at speeds of up to 400 packs per minute, while ensuring reliable mechanical sealing without the need for additional adhesives or plastics.

Heat-sealed tea envelopes are becoming increasingly important as tea brands seek higher barrier performance and enhanced product integrity. At its booth, Sappi is presenting functional paper solutions for sealed applications, offering excellent protection against moisture, oxygen, grease and aroma, key to preserving quality and freshness. In addition, these papers ensure excellent runnability on high-speed packaging lines.

“Tea envelopes are at the core of both product protection and brand communication,” says Kerstin Dietze, Key Account Manager Paper & Packaging Solutions at Sappi. “At interpack, we show how fiber-based solutions can match the performance of conventional materials while enabling a more sustainable approach.”

As regulatory pressure increases, particularly with the EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) coming into effect in 2026, tea brands are actively seeking alternatives to traditional multi-material laminates. Sappi’s mono-material paper solutions offer a fully recyclable option within existing paper waste streams, helping brands future-proof their packaging strategies.

In addition to their functional performance, Sappi’s tea envelope papers offer excellent printability and a natural look and feel, supporting premium brand positioning and effective storytelling at the point of sale. By removing the need for plastic overwraps, these solutions help reduce packaging complexity and environmental impact.

Attendees at interpack can experience these tea packaging innovations at Sappi’s booth, located in Hall 8a, Booth B35, from May 7-13.
