Diageo Trials a Paper-ish Bottle of Johnnie Walker (Yes, it Has a Plastic Liner)

Another day, another paper bottle—with a plastic liner.

Today, British multinational alcoholic company Diageo announced they would trial a 90% paper-based bottle for Johnnie Walker Black Label. The trial, which will run until mid-October, will be carried out in Edinburgh at the Johnnie Walker Princess Street’s 1820 bar to see how bartenders interact with pouring from the bottle and if it can withstand bar environments. Crafted alongside PA Consulting, a member of the Bottle Collective with Pulpac, this is Diageo’s first 70cl paper-ish bottle. The bottle will not be sold to the general public, and only 250 have been made.

Diageo previously trialed a mini 80ml Bailey’s paper-based bottle using the same dry molded fiber in the Johnnie Walker Black iteration for the Barcelona Time Out Festival earlier in 2024. (Johnnie Walker also did another paper bottle back in 2021 with Pulpex). The design team took those learnings to create a larger bottle for the brand. The silhouette does retain some of Johnnie Walker Black Label’s square attributes, but with this limited offering, they have used distinctive facets cut into the bottle along with some embossing of Johnnie Walker, too.
