Coveris announces food-to-go packaging expansion at St Neots plant

Coveris has unveiled a £5m ($6.68m) investment plan at its St Neots packaging facility in Cambridgeshire, UK, to scale up the production capacity of its recyclable food-to-go packaging products.

The company will invest in print, conversion, and warehouse expansion, which it says will triple its operational footprint.

The initiative represents Coveris’ Paper business unit’s largest single investment, transforming the site into a future-focused factory.

It will feature a 3,158m² production space, advanced robotics, lean design, and a new flexographic press, aligning with the company’s ‘No Waste’ vision.

The expansion, set to begin this month, is scheduled for completion in the first quarter (Q1) of 2025.

It will complement Coveris’ adjacent Wisbech and St Neots Howard Road facilities, which will support additional manufacturing during the phased installation.

Coveris’ expansion will substantially increase the production of recyclable, Freshlife-engineered food-to-go packs, which currently number approximately 700 million annually.

The new facility will also feature 100% automated inspection to minimise waste and an advanced air system to reduce energy consumption.

Coveris Paper business unit president Jo Ormrod said: “We’re really excited to unveil our expansion plans for the St Neots site and demonstrate our ongoing commitment to our customers as a leader in food to go.

“Having been purpose-built to not only increase capacity and availability of our award-winning products, we will now also be able to offer these with a reduced environmental footprint for both Coveris and our customers.”

According to the company, the UK food-to-go market is anticipated to reach £25bn by 2027.

Last week, Coveris opened a new vacuum skin packaging manufacturing facility in Winsford, Cheshire, UK.
