UPM and Eastman unveil paper-based packaging with biobased coating

UPM Specialty Papers, a business of UPM, has developed a biopolymer-coated paper packaging solution in collaboration with global speciality materials company Eastman.

The packaging is tailored for food applications that demand effective grease and oxygen barriers.

The new product combines Eastman’s compostable Solus performance additives with the BioPBS polymer, resulting in a thin coating applied to UPM’s barrier base papers, which are compostable and recyclable.

The new packaging solution enhances the barrier properties of UPM’s Solide Lucent and UPM Prego base papers, but also offers exceptional heat sealability.

The solution is designed to retain barrier protection when folded, making it ideal for flexible packaging.

The technology can be recycled within existing fibre recycling streams, supporting brands in their transition to more sustainable packaging options.

The compatibility of this new solution with standard low-density polyethylene extrusion coating equipment means that companies can adopt this sustainable option without the need for additional capital investments.

It has been tested for recyclability using the PTS method and is certified for both home and industrial compostability.

The company will exhibit the new packaging samples at the upcoming PACK EXPO International in Chicago, US, at UPM Specialty Papers’ stand from 3-6 November 2024.

UPM R&D packaging portfolio development manager Esa Saukkonen said: “We are excited to introduce the result of our development work with Eastman. Together with our partners, we are constantly pushing the performance of fibre-based packaging.

“This new biopolymer coated solution, for example, provides a new option for difficult-to-pack foods ranging from confectionary end uses to meat pies found in chilled-food aisles,”

In a related development, UPM Raflatac, another business of UPM, has introduced the OptiCut WashOff linerless label to facilitate plastic packaging reuse.

This label is washable and can be easily separated without adhesive residue, making it suitable for both industrial processes and home washing machines.

It retains all the benefits of the OptiCut linerless range, including strong adhesion, reduced service costs, increased efficiency due to longer maintenance cycles, and flexibility in printing.

Last month, UPM Specialty Papers and Michelman, a manufacturer of environmentally friendly advanced materials, introduced three new structures for high-performance, recyclable paper packaging.
