Huhtamaki initiates environmental risk assessments in India

Huhtamaki, a provider of sustainable packaging solutions, has embarked on a pioneering initiative to assess and mitigate nature-related risks across its operations in India.

The company is claimed to be the first in the country to formally pilot assessments of its impact on nature.

This year, the company’s ten factories in India have undergone a comprehensive biodiversity-based risk assessment, utilising the LEAP approach under the Task Force on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) guidelines.

These assessments were aimed at identifying potential business risks and opportunities related to biodiversity and have considered impacts on marine life and terrestrial flora and fauna.

From these assessments, Huhtamaki has pinpointed three focus sites requiring concentrated efforts to mitigate potential biodiversity impacts.

These sites will undergo further opportunity mapping and the creation of site-specific biodiversity risk mitigation plans.

The factories have also completed water scarcity risk assessments, aligning with the biodiversity studies to identify priority areas for intervention.

By 2025, Huhtamaki plans to finalise and implement these mitigation measures, demonstrating its commitment to sustainability and the protection of natural resources.

The company’s approach aims to support its customers in meeting their sustainability commitments and safeguard the well-being of the planet.

Last month, Huhtamaki began producing smooth moulded fibre lids at its Lurgan facility in Northern Ireland.

With operations in 37 countries and 103 locations worldwide, Huhtamaki is focused on delivering sustainable packaging solutions to its customers.

The company employs approximately 18,000 people globally.
