Goodwill of Colorado and O-I Glass partner on glass recycling

US-based Goodwill of Colorado has partnered with glass packaging manufacturer O-I Glass to launch a new initiative aimed at boosting glass recycling.

This collaboration, announced in conjunction with the pending ‘America Recycles Day’ on 15 November, aims to increase consumer glass recycling rates through the introduction of dedicated collection bins at Goodwill’s outlet locations across the state of Colorado.

Glass, a material that is 100% recyclable, is the primary focus of this programme.

Glass is considered one of the most sustainable packaging materials, approved as ‘Generally RecogniZed as Safe’ by the US Food and Drug Administration, and does not produce harmful byproducts when recycled.

Colorado’s current recycling rate stands at 16%, which is half of the national average.

Goodwill of Colorado president and CEO Karla Grazier said: “As a Colorado sustainability leader for the last century who recycled or repurposed more than 208 million pounds of donated items last year, we’re honoured to partner with O-I to help elevate Colorado’s glass recycling rate.

“The impact of recycling doesn’t end with a donation to Goodwill. Because partnerships like this help us extend the reach of our mission by optimising the value of donated items, together we can create positive change in the lives of our fellow Coloradans who receive job training, education and support through Goodwill of Colorado’s community impact programmes.”

Goodwill of Colorado recycled 80 tons of glass last year in Colorado Springs alone.

The partnership with O-I Glass is expected to further increase this figure.

The initiative will see Goodwill of Colorado collecting glass in branded bins at four of its outlet locations in Colorado Springs, Westminster, and Denver.

O-I sustainability collaboration specialist Danielle Brickner said: “The glass collected through this collaboration will be processed at O-I’s Glass to Glass facility in Broomfield and will be made into new glass packaging at the company’s Windsor facility, sometimes in as little as 30 days.

“We are excited to partner with Goodwill of Colorado as we continue to drive waste reduction, material conservation, energy reduction and job creation in the Denver area.”

In September this year, O-I Glass, Workwell Industries, and distillers Suntory Global Spirits, Diageo North America, and Pernod Ricard announced a collaboration to transform glass recycling in West Louisville, US.
