Smurfit Westrock has launched a new EasySplit Bag-in-Box (BiB) design to address the impending requirements of the EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR).
This regulation will require all applicable packaging to achieve at least an 80% recyclability rate.
The EasySplit innovation is aimed at ensuring BiB products can be easily separated into their component parts, significantly improving the recycling process.
When these components are properly separated, the BiB recyclability rate can exceed 90%, surpassing the PPWR’s mandate.
However, if the bag and box are not separated, the entire package is relegated to the recycling stream of the dominant material, typically cardboard.
In such cases, the plastic bag cannot be recycled, and the recyclability rate is capped at 75%. This rate could be even lower if the plastic is deemed harmful to the paper recycling process.

The patented EasySplit Bag-in-Box design represents an advancement in packaging technology. It ensures that the separation of materials is straightforward, which is essential for meeting the stringent criteria of the upcoming PPWR.
In its effort to improve sustainability, Smurfit Westrock teamed up with Pizza Hut earlier this month to promote pizza box recycling awareness among customers in Louisville, Kentucky, US.
Smurfit Kappa merged with Westrock, a folding paperboard box manufacturer, in July 2024.
