Pregis embraces wind power for 2040 net-zero pledge

Packaging solutions provider Pregis is making significant strides toward its 2040 net-zero commitment by offsetting 100% of the electricity consumed at six of its facilities with wind power as part of its 2024 sustainability initiative.

This initiative will target sites that primarily produce kerbside-recyclable paper mailers.

These EverTec mailing solutions are used in e-commerce fulfilment. This move aligns with the company’s end-to-end value chain strategy.

EverTec mailers are designed for circularity in packaging and help reduce carbon emissions throughout a product’s life cycle.

The mailers carry the Sustainable Forestry Initiative Certified Sourcing label, which ensures the materials are responsibly sourced. They also feature the How2Recycle ‘widely recyclable’ designation, providing consumers with clear guidance for proper kerbside recycling.

The company’s renewable energy commitment is set to reduce market-based scope 2 emissions by more than 4,000 tonnes (t) of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e) annually. This reduction is reportedly tantamount to the emissions from driving between the US’ New York City and Los Angeles 3,723 times.

The company’s comprehensive decarbonisation strategy includes transitioning all global operations to renewable energy, enhancing energy efficiency, and electrifying manufacturing processes.

Pregis CSO Kris Getty said: “Achieving net zero requires bold actions.

“This milestone reflects our unwavering commitment to environmental responsibility and demonstrates our investment in decarbonising our operations. We are proud to be a steward for positive change within the packaging industry by aligning closely with the values of our customers and staying ahead of regulatory changes.”

Pregis also plans to expand on-site solar energy installations and innovate sustainable products with lower-carbon feedstocks.

Pregis Mailing Solutions president Ryan Wolcott said: “EverTec mailing solutions are designed to support a circular economy while empowering customers to confidently achieve their environmental goals without compromise.

“Our EverTec mailers strike the ideal balance between sustainability and performance, enabling brands to thrive in e-commerce fulfilment.”
