Phase two of Québec’s DRS expansion to start in March

The Quebec Beverage Container Recycling Association (QBCRA) in Canada is set to implement phase two of the modernisation and expansion of the city’s deposit return scheme (DRS) from 1 March 2025.

Phase two will incorporate all plastic beverage containers from 100ml to two litres into the scheme, marking a significant advancement in the region’s environmental protection agenda.

The expansion is a continuation of the modernisation efforts that began in 2022 and is part of the city’s broader strategy to recover five billion containers each year, aiming for a 90% recovery rate by 2032. The DRS, once updated, is expected to significantly reduce waste and increase recycling rates.

For Québec’s residents, the updated system will further streamline the process of returning beverage containers, making it easier for them to participate in environmental conservation efforts.

The inclusion of a variety of plastic containers such as water bottles, milk jugs, juice containers, soft drink bottles, and certain spirit bottles allows for a more comprehensive approach to recycling.

The QBCRC emphasises that this measure not only simplifies the deposit system but also encourages citizens to engage in positive environmental actions by returning more containers.

Looking ahead, the DRS will continue to evolve. The plan is to further expand the types of containers accepted to include glass and multilayer cartons by 2027.

This move will ensure that Québec’s DRS remains aligned with international best practices for waste management and recycling.
