Starbucks’ New Compostable Cold Cups Receive Icy Reception

Last summer, global coffee chain Starbucks announced a small rollout of fiber-based compostable cold beverage cups in 24 (out of over 17,000) US locations. By its own admission, the Siren introduced these new cups due to local mandates, as they could no longer use the standard plastic cup for cold drinks.

Still, even with local packaging laws forcing their hand, the company maintains its goal of reducing waste to landfill by 50% and ensuring all customer-facing packaging is either recyclable, reusable, or compostable by 2030.

However, more customers in 14 states will start seeing iced lattes and sugar bombs (aka Frappuccinos) in about 580 stores. According to Fox Business, locations in California, Washington, Hawaii, Minnesota, Arizona, New Mexico, Massachusetts, Michigan, Maryland, Connecticut, Virginia, South Carolina, Colorado, and Georgia will see the new packaging.
