Axens and SOREMA partner to boost plastic waste recycling

French chemical recycling company Axens and Italian mechanical recycling company Sorema have announced a partnership to deliver advanced integrated solutions for plastic waste recycling.

The collaboration aims to maximise the yield and revenue from waste feedstock to recycled plastic.

Axens aims to address the recycling of challenging plastics through its range of commercial technologies.

These technologies enable the production of a recycled naphtha that is equivalent to petrochemical naphtha through a proven pyrolysis process.

This advancement is claimed to facilitate the creation of food-grade recycled polyolefins.

In addition to this, Axens offers the Rewind PET process, which can transform all types of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) waste into high-quality, virgin-like recycled PET.

The recycled material is said to be suitable for various applications, including food contact packaging and textiles.

On the other hand, Sorema will be offering its expertise in mechanical treatment operations for plastic waste, which enhances the preparation of feedstock for the advanced recycling units designed by Axens.

The partnership extends globally, with Axens and Sorema providing their integrated solutions from the initial stages of basic engineering design to the delivery of prefabricated modular units.

This comprehensive approach is claimed to empower customers to execute their plastic recycling projects more effectively.

In October last year, Axens, in partnership with IFPEN and JEPLAN, announced the commercialisation of the Rewind PET chemical recycling process.

This followed the successful one-year testing of the process at a semi-industrial demonstration unit in Kitakyushu, Japan.

The process is expected to play a significant role in advancing the energy transition and promoting a circular economy for plastics.
