LyondellBasell introduces Pro-fax EP649U for rigid packaging

LyondellBasell (LYB), a chemical company, has introduced Pro-fax EP649U, a new polypropylene impact copolymer tailored for the rigid packaging sector.

The company states that its product is designed for thin-walled injection moulding, making it especially well-suited for food packaging applications.

Pro-fax EP649U reportedly offers high flow properties and quick crystallisation, enabling the efficient production of thin-walled containers while boosting productivity and product quality.

The additive package in Pro-fax EP649U ensures easy mould release, reduces static, and enhances downstream handling on high-speed filling lines.

The company said the product’s flexural modulus improves the stacking strength of containers, allowing for thinner walls and lighter designs.

A key feature of Pro-fax EP649U is its enhanced organoleptic properties, free from controlled rheology byproducts that could impart unwanted taste or odour to packaged goods.

This new product offers wide food contact compliance for both the US and international markets, along with a non-phthalate catalyst for resin production and additives that are entirely vegan.

The company also mentioned that Pro-fax EP649U is part of the LYB CirculenRenew and CirculenRevive portfolios, supporting customers in reaching their sustainability objectives for recycled content and carbon footprint reduction.

Products under CirculenRenew and CirculenRevive comprise polyolefin with renewable or recycled content, derived through a mass-balance approach and certified under the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification PLUS standard.

CirculenRenew is derived from biobased waste and residues while CirculenRevive is produced using pyrolysis oil from plastic waste feedstock.

LYB commercial manager James Deaton said: “At LYB, our purpose is creating solutions for everyday sustainable living. Pro-fax EP649U exemplifies our commitment to sustainable innovation by providing our customers with choices to meet their sustainability objectives without compromising on performance.”
