PODCAST | Achieving Sustainability in Pet Food Packaging

Pet owners aren’t just growing in number, they’re more discerning than ever, and that means an increased focus on purchasing natural, nutritious food that is packaged sustainably. Tetra Pak’s Tetra Recart® is a smart, convenient packaging choice that locks in flavor and nutrition and lessens climate impact.

To discuss Tetra Pak’s approach to pet food, we recently sat down with Matias Blanco, Tetra Recart Business Development Manager.

We asked Blanco how changing pet owner or “pet parent” preferences are affecting wet pet food packaging.

“The most important attributes are that the package has to be easy to store, easy to open, and protects the product well,” Blanco said, adding that one of the new attributes that pet parents are seeking is sustainability. “So recyclability ranks really high.”

In addition to being recyclable, 70% of Tetra Recart’s packaging comes from renewable sources, i.e., paper that comes from a renewable forest.

We also asked Blanco about the advantages of Tetra Recart when it comes to storage and logistics.

Blanco noted that pet food often is packaged in cans. “So whenever those producers are transporting cans into their manufacturing facility, they’re basically transporting air, right? Our packages come flat in boxes, so the ratio between our empty packages compared to cans in term of inbound logistics is 9 to 1.”

Meanwhile, retailers benefit from the shelf-space reduction offered by Tetra Recart packaging, which is more compact versus cans.
