The UK’s Domino Printing Sciences has launched its latest Cx150i Piezo Inkjet (PIJ) printer, targeting improvements in coated shelf-ready packaging.
The company noted that its new solution has been engineered to print high-quality codes on nonporous surfaces, including secondary packaging.
The Cx150i is part of Domino’s Cx-Series range, concentrating on large-area printing with UV-curable inks.
With a resolution capability of up to 600dpi, the printer can generate small characters suitable for dense 2D codes and compact Asian character sets.
Domino claims that its inks adhere to international good manufacturing practice standards and European Printing Ink Association regulations, ensuring safe usage on secondary food packaging.
The Cx150i’s UV-curable ink set is reportedly distinguished by its quality and durability while also minimising volatile organic compound emissions compared to conventional printing methods.
Engineered with sustainability in mind, the printer incorporates low-energy LED curing lamps and an innovative ink pouch system to reduce waste.
Furthermore, the Cx150i eliminates the necessity for regular cleaning or ink purging, which further diminishes waste and energy consumption, the company said.
Domino PIJ product manager David Edwards said: “In today’s fast-paced, consumer-driven world, brands are increasingly looking to stand out and increase shelf appeal.
“This is driving a move away from plain, brown cardboard towards branded nonporous substrates for shelf-ready and display packaging. With nonporous packaging, code durability can be an issue, particularly where food-contact materials are concerned.
“Compliant solutions often fall short of expectations regarding legibility and durability and can be wasteful in terms of overall ink and energy usage. We have developed the Cx150i with exactly these considerations in mind.”
Domino noted that the printer can be installed as a standalone unit or integrated with its automated coding and vision systems.
This flexibility allows for a comprehensive closed-loop printing and verification solution tailored to various operational needs.
Claimed to be an Industry 4.0-ready device, the Cx150i offers better connectivity options, including integration with third-party label creation software and factory enterprise resource planning systems.
Optional cloud-based services from Domino provide continuous monitoring of the printer’s performance and utilisation, ensuring operational efficiency and timely maintenance.
In September last year, Domino launched its 1,200dpi digital print engine for integration into flexographic lines.
