Amcor and Metsä Group partner to create eco-friendly food packaging solutions

Amcor and Metsä Group partner to create eco-friendly food packaging solutions

Packaging provider Amcor has teamed up with Metsä Group to innovate moulded fibre-based food packaging solutions.

The partnership aims to develop 3D packaging with lidding and liners for a range of food applications.

By prioritising recyclable solutions, the two companies intend to meet the increasing demand for environmentally responsible packaging options.

As part of this collaboration, Amcor will combine its high-barrier film liners and lidding technology with Metsä Group’s Muoto, a wood-based moulded fibre product.

This integration is expected to improve the functionality and sustainability of food packaging.

The initiative aims to produce fibre-based packaging that not only safeguards perishable food items but also prolongs their shelf life, Amcor said.

Amcor’s AmFiber range encompasses various fibre-based packaging solutions.

These products are currently available on retail shelves worldwide, serving diverse applications such as snacks, dairy, and personal care items.

The liner technology developed by Amcor offers strength and formability to moulded fibre trays.

Muoto, created by Metsä Spring, is both recyclable and biodegradable, making it suitable for a variety of uses, from takeaway to industrial packaging.

By integrating Amcor’s high-barrier film, Muoto gains enhanced functionality and improved marketability.

The complete packaging solution is designed to be recyclable within the paper stream in most European markets. It has a Confederation of European Paper Industries recyclability score exceeding 80%, reinforcing its sustainability credentials.

In the future, the partnership aims to develop a compostable solution. The initial products resulting from this collaboration are expected to be commercially available in Europe later this year.

Last month, Amcor rolled out its Liquiflex AmPrima flexible pouches in the European market, which were designed for bulk foodservice applications.
