Agilyx and DerGrunePunkt sign agreement for waste polystyrene recycling

Agilyx has signed a memorandum of understanding with DerGrunePunkt, widely recognised as GreenDot.

The partnership will focus on improving the procurement of waste polystyrene (PS) feedstock for advanced recycling methods.

Agilyx CEO Ranjeet Bhatia said: “We are very pleased with this agreement and the synergy between GreenDot, an early mover in the European advanced recycling feedstock industry, and our Styrenyx plants, the industry’s first commercial solution for scalable recycling of waste polystyrene.

“We are excited to take this important step to establish a cost-effective, stable, and long-term sourcing partnership with GreenDot.”

As part of the collaboration, GreenDot will provide waste PS to Agilyx’s Styrenyx facilities.

The initiative is anticipated to enable the conversion of this material into styrene monomer, thereby promoting sustainable practices within the sector.

GreenDot manages the processing of over 300,000 tons (t) of lightweight packaging each year, capitalising on its prominent role in Germany’s extended producer responsibility framework. This access to plastic waste is vital for the partnership’s success.

The initial stage of the collaboration is expected to generate up to 20,000t of specialised plastic feedstock annually.

This feedstock will be customised for applications within the European Economic Area, aligning with Agilyx’s strategic objectives.

Additionally, the partnership seeks to prioritise the distribution of recycled styrene monomer to GreenDot’s brand owner clients.

This effort is aimed at supporting these clients in achieving the recycled content goals established by the EU’s recently enacted Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation.

DerGrunePunkt CEO Laurent Auguste said: “We have unique access to high volumes of waste plastic through our existing programmes, and the expertise and capacity to produce advanced recycling feedstock.

“We are pleased to collaborate with Agilyx to increase the recycling rates of polystyrene. Along with our rPE [recycled polyethylene] and rPP [recycled polypropylene] offering, providing our existing global brand customers with access to recycled polystyrene helps close the loop on their packaging needs.”
