The Legacy Paper Group, a division of BMI Group US, has revealed its intention to resume operations of Paper Machine #8 (PM8) at its Port Huron facility in Michigan.
This initiative will restore 30,000 tons (t) of annual production capacity after a four-year hiatus.
The choice to reactivate PM8 is reportedly driven by the rising market demand for eco-friendly, lightweight speciality papers, which are used in food packaging and various essential applications.
The Port Huron site has been operational since 1888 under different ownerships, including Port Huron Sulphite and Paper Co., Port Huron Paper, Pentair, EB Eddy Paper, and Domtar Specialty Papers.
PM8 is recognised for manufacturing lightweight papers tailored for quick-service restaurant packaging, sweet wrappers, and medical table covers.
The facility’s strategic location provides access to significant markets in the Midwest and Northeast US.
Furthermore, the site’s established supply chains and a skilled workforce will enable a swift increase in production.
The Legacy Paper Group managing director Mark Bessette said: “The fundamentals driving speciality paper demand have never been stronger.
“Consumer behaviour shifts accelerated by the pandemic, combined with intensifying focus on packaging sustainability, have created a significant supply-demand imbalance that PM8 is uniquely positioned to address.
“Our customers are demanding sustainable packaging solutions that don’t compromise on performance. The speciality grades we’ll produce on PM8 deliver both environmental benefits and the functional properties required for demanding foodservice applications.”
Paper-based packaging is increasingly preferred over plastic options due to its green characteristics, the company said.
This trend addresses environmental issues linked to oil-based plastics and microplastic pollution, aligning with the principles of leading global food brands.
