LDPE (soft plastic used in packaging) sees mixed demand

Low‑density polyethylene (LDPE) is a flexible, lightweight plastic commonly seen in everyday packaging—from sandwich bags and shrink wrap to tubing and squeeze bottles.

Its branched molecular structure gives LDPE softness and versatility, making it ideal for products that bend, stretch or conform. It’s widely recycled under code #4 and dominates the flexible packaging sector due to moisture resistance and cost‑effectiveness.

In early June 2025 the LDPE packaging market showed contrasting trends in Germany and China, driven by supply dynamics and demand shifts in core industries. Understanding how LDPE relates to packaging helps explain the current divergence.

Stable LDPE packaging prices in Germany

Germany’s LDPE packaging segment benefited from steady demand even as other sectors slowed.

During the first week of June, prices held firm thanks to a well‑balanced supply‑demand mix. Imports from the US and Turkey ensured stable availability despite global shipping challenges.

However, weak performance in construction and automotive weighed on overall LDPE usage, with new car registrations falling 1.4% in May.

Packaging demand remains the market’s strongest pillar, keeping LDPE prices from falling, even as other industries trim back.

Falling LDPE prices in China amid oversupply

In contrast, China experienced a 0.7% drop in LDPE prices early in June due to oversupply and cautious buyer behaviour. Domestic output stayed high and regular imports from the Middle East and the US kept inventories full.

Most buyers purchased just to meet immediate needs, avoiding stockpiles.

Construction sector output remained soft and the non‑manufacturing index dropped to 51.0%, indicating sluggish broader demand. Even though electric vehicle sales rose 14% in May, the boost wasn’t enough to offset weak activity elsewhere.

ChemAnalyst forecasts Germany’s LDPE packaging prices may come under pressure in June, with potential recovery in July due to port delays and improved buying sentiment.

In China, a restocking phase could push prices upward in June, though July may bring renewed declines as seasonal demand decreases.

While global feedstock ethylene costs remain low—supporting stable production expenses—the diverging trends highlight how local factors like shipping logistics, sectoral demand, and import volumes shape ldpe market trends.

summary

  • LDPE packaging remains the most consistent support across both regions.
  • Germany’s market is steady, underpinned by balanced supply from imports and packaging demand.
  • China is seeing a price dip, driven by oversupply and soft end‑use sectors.
  • Global production costs are stable, but regional shipping and industry health are key drivers.

This contrast reinforces how the flexible packaging value chain plays a central role in LDPE markets, even as broader industrial demand fluctuates.
