INEOS Styrolution launches biobased polystyrene for food packaging

INEOS Styrolution, a producer of high-performance styrenics, has launched its 100% ‘bio-attributed’ polystyrene (PS), Styrolution PS 158K BC100, for food packaging applications.

As of early 2025, food trays made from this biobased material were available in the Japanese market through a partnership with a prominent retail franchise.

The Styrolution PS 158K BC100 solution is produced using an International Sustainability and Carbon Certification-certified mass balance approach, utilising 100% biobased feedstock.

This results in a 172% reduction in carbon emissions compared to conventional fossil-based polystyrene.

The material complies with global food contact standards, including the Japanese Food Sanitation Act, and has earned JCII’s A certification for stringent food safety compliance.

Additionally, the product offers heat resistance and clarity, ensuring both functionality and visual appeal for food packaging.

INEOS Styrolution APAC business management vice-president Marcela Villegas said: “We are thrilled to mark this milestone in integrating bio-attributed materials into everyday life.

“It shows that sustainability can be achieved while meeting regulatory standards, allowing businesses to progress in their environmental goals without compromising quality or safety.”

Last January, INEOS Styrolution introduced a new Zylar grade of its methyl methacrylate butadiene styrene material.

Zylar EX350 is said to offer a balance of stiffness and toughness, making it a suitable option for carrier tapes used in packaging electronic components.
