Amcor and Mediacor unveil recyclable refill pouch

Amcor, a specialist in packaging solutions, and Mediacor, a Slovenian producer of organic food, cleaning, and laundry products, have joined forces to introduce a two-litre spouted stand-up pouch for liquid products, designed for recycling in Italy, Germany, and Austria.

The new packaging has been rolled out with Mediacor’s Nana brand’s cleaning products.

Nana is touted to be the first in the home and personal care industry to adopt Amcor’s AmPrima Refill Pouch, advancing the move towards lightweight, single-material packaging that minimises plastic consumption.

For nearly ten years, Nana has used polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles made from 100% recycled materials. To expand into larger, flexible refill formats, Nana collaborated with Amcor to modify its filling lines, reducing both plastic usage and packaging weight.

A press release states that the AmPrima pouch cuts plastic use for the two-litre product by up to 80% and reduces the packaging’s carbon footprint by up to 64% compared to two one-litre blow-moulded PET bottles.

These reductions were calculated using Amcor’s ASSET life cycle assessment, certified by Carbon Trust.

The new Nana pouch aligns with the brand’s EcoLabel certification, reflecting high environmental standards.

As e-commerce is a significant sales channel for Nana, the pouch is International Safe Transit Association (ISTA) 6A certified, ensuring it can endure drop tests from 1.5m without leaks or damage, meeting the demands of logistics in the sector.

The Nana-branded refill pouch is now available in Italy, Germany, Austria, and Slovenia.

The solution can include post-consumer recycled content, aligning with the EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation.

In June this year, Amcor and Cofigeo developed a three-compartment tray for single-serve microwaveable meals.
