Packaging machinery manufacturers are focusing on designing compact equipment that can integrate into existing plant spaces, handle delicate materials without damage, and is user-friendly in operation and maintenance.

Challenges such as labour shortages, the integration of AI, sustainability considerations and fluctuating US government policies are influencing the industry’s trajectory.

The infographic highlights the ongoing hiring and retention difficulties faced by original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and end users.

AI, automated systems and data analytics are seen as solutions to enhance efficiency amidst labour challenges, with a growing emphasis on practical applications for on-the-floor problem-solving.

Workforce development programmes are becoming a strategic investment for companies.

Despite its potential, predictive maintenance has seen a slow uptake, with end users wary of costs and reluctant to shift from established preventative maintenance routines.

However, some OEMs have reported improved manufacturing efficiency through the integration of predictive systems into the human-machine interface (HMI). Preventive maintenance offers control over timing and costs.

Sustainability remains a critical factor for end users aiming to improve profitability. There is a noticeable shift as companies attempt to balance environmental objectives with cost and operational constraints.

Meanwhile, tariffs and changing US policies add to market uncertainty, complicating strategic planning.

PMMI market development vice-president Jorge Izquierdo stated: “End-user customers are also increasingly challenged by high stock-keeping unit counts, innovative packaging formats and the need to minimise downtime.”
