DS Smith and BSH Nazarje reveal sustainable packaging for Bosch hand mixers

The collaboration replaces the previous expanded polystyrene foam (EPS) inserts with a fully recyclable corrugated cardboard alternative.

The solution, DS Smith Universal Protection for Household Blenders, features a protective insert called Safe Shell.

This insert is designed to accommodate three different hand mixer models, offering flexibility for BSH Nazarje’s production process.

The company produces up to 170,000 blenders annually, each requiring two EPS inserts.

The new offering is expected to phase out up to 340,000 pieces of EPS.

The Safe Shell insert enables faster packing times on the production line and supports quick assembly of the corrugated cardboard inserts.

The packaging design integrates with Bosch’s existing boxes, pallets and packaging processes, requiring no modifications while improving durability for transportation.

DS Smith Slovenia director of sales and Innovation Jožica Hojnik stated: “With BSH Nazarje, we have developed a packaging solution that is technically sophisticated, simple and efficient, while utilising a minimum of materials and ensuring recyclability.

“We are dedicated to helping our customers move towards the circular economy.”

In January 2025, DS Smith was acquired by International Paper.

The combined entity is focused on the growing markets of North America and the Europe, Middle East and Africa region.

In July, DS Smith launched cardboard trays to allow the secure transport of automotive headlights.
