The Art Of The Critique and Why It’s Critical To Learn to Give And Receive Good Feedback

What is good graphic design?

Determining what makes for good design isn’t so straightforward, but it’s a question that comes up every day in the industry. Something can be beautiful and well-crafted and completely miss the mark. While art has more room for expression and creators can take more risks, design work is typically carried out within specific guidelines with prominent guardrails, all in the service of satisfying a client.

Sure, your work can be aesthetically pleasing and beautiful, but it can also fail a client’s initial brief. Communicating this disconnect should be easy, but giving and receiving feedback is often tricky in design. Good feedback should be framed within a project’s goals and needs, and those receiving feedback should ask for clarification and help understanding why something doesn’t work for whatever project they’re executing.
