Ahlstrom launches home-compostable coffee pod material

Fibre-based speciality materials provider Ahlstrom has launched GreenPod Home, a fibre-based solution for the single-serve coffee pod sector.

The solution carries the OK compost HOME certification from TÜV Austria, whihc verifies that the GreenPod Home range is capable of biodegrading under domestic composting conditions without leaving toxic residues or persistent microplastics.

The designation allows converters and brand owners to develop GreenPod solutions that householders can compost at home.

Ahlstrom Research and Development head Patrice Blanc stated: “Demand for sustainable alternatives drives innovation in coffee markets.

“Although Ahlstrom was already able to offer industrially compostable solutions to the market, this home compostable patent-pending solution is a major step forward that reinforces Ahlstrom’s strong credentials in biodegradable fibre-based solutions for coffee applications.”

The GreenPod Home range works with standard converting lines.

Ahlstrom beverage and casing business unit vice-president Philippe Sevoz stated: “Aligned with Ahlstrom’s sustainability priorities and incoming stronger regulations within the food packaging industry, we are committed to becoming the market reference in sustainability and to offer our customers a complete portfolio of heat-sealable and non-heat-sealable home compostable tea and coffee solutions.”

In September 2025, the company presented its expanded range of sustainable release and label papers for pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) applications at Labelexpo Europe 2025.

The range includes low-impact supercalendered release papers designed to reduce their environmental footprint and promote circularity.

In May, Ahlstrom unveiled a new “parchmentiser”, PMZ5, at its Saint-Séverin facility in France, following a €15m ($16.8m) investment to advance sustainable innovation and customer partnerships in the food packaging sector.
