Avantium and Logoplaste enter capacity reservation deal for Releaf

Dutch renewable and circular polymer materials company Avantium has entered a capacity reservation agreement with packaging company Logoplaste for its plant-based and recyclable polymer, polyethylene furanoate (PEF), marketed under the brand name Releaf.

Releaf, derived from plant-based sugars through Avantium’s proprietary YXY technology, offers circular and high-barrier performance properties suitable for a range of packaging applications.

The new agreement allows Logoplaste to secure future volumes of Releaf from licensed production facilities utilising this technology.

The collaboration is expected to strengthen Logoplaste’s development of Releaf-based packaging and address increasing market demand following successful product validation.

Logoplaste chief technology officer Paulo Correia stated: “This agreement is a testament to our shared commitment to driving innovation in sustainable packaging.

“By securing future volumes of Avantium’s Releaf, we are able to accelerate the development of advanced packaging solutions with outstanding barrier properties, supporting our customers’ ambitions for circularity and performance across a wide range of applications.”

Both companies are already part of the Bottle Collective, a consortium working on recyclable fibre-based bottles that includes partners such as Diageo, Opella (formerly Sanofi) and Haleon.

The latest agreement extends their partnership beyond the Bottle Collective, focusing on applications across Logoplaste’s core sectors, including beverages, food, pharmaceuticals, home care and personal care.

Logoplaste specialises in injection and blow moulding processes for sustainable and high-performance packaging solutions.

Avantium is commissioning what it describes as the world’s first commercial-scale facility for furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) – a key component in PEF – located in Delfzijl, the Netherlands.

The company previously demonstrated the technology at pilot scale in Geleen.

Avantium business development director Bineke Posthumus added: “We are excited to deepen our collaboration with Logoplaste as a strategic partner. The capacity reservation agreement reflects the growing momentum behind Releaf as a key material for next-generation, high-performance packaging.

“Together, we are paving the way for scaleable solutions that combine renewable materials with outstanding functionality.”
