Valmet to rebuild Wuzhou Special Paper’s recycled board machine

Valmet, the Finnish supplier of technologies and automation services for the pulp and paper sector, has been selected to rebuild a paper machine and supply two winders for Wuzhou Special Paper’s mill in Hubei, China.

The start-up is expected in early 2027, with the order’s value remaining undisclosed.

The investment will convert Wuzhou Special Paper’s recently relocated machine to recycled fluting and liner grades, extending the lifecycle of the original Valmet-supplied unit and increasing production capacity.

It follows earlier winder orders placed by Wuzhou Special Paper in July 2024 and March 2025.

Wuzhou Special Paper deputy general manager Zhang Yanchen stated: “This investment marks a significant step forward in our strategy to expand capacity and strengthen our position in the packaging market.

“The relocation and conversion of the paper machine allow us to utilise and leverage the already proven technology securing the machine efficiency. As the original equipment supplier, Valmet provides solutions that meet Wuzhou’s product quality targets and maximise investment savings.”

Valmet’s delivery includes a new layering headbox with dilution profiler, rebuilt forming and press sections, a new film sizer, two extra-wide winders and a machine control system for the entire line.

The scope also covers spare parts packages and data connectivity to support performance and efficiency.

Valmet packaging and paper business area sales manager Pekka Tolvanen added: “Once completed, the machine will be the widest containerboard machine in China, with an impressive wire width of 11.3m.”

In November 2025, Valmet launched an updated version of its wet end analyser to enhance process control and product quality for paper, board and tissue producers.

The new system is designed to strengthen wet end process stability, improve product characteristics and lower operating costs.

It features additional measurements and more sampling points to widen monitoring coverage and deliver the key parameters needed to stabilise wet end operations.

Founded in 2008 and based in Quzhou City, China, Wuzhou Special Paper specialises in research and development, production and sales of special papers, including food wrapping, glassine, tracing, transfer printing and fine papers.

In 2024, Valmet reported net sales of €5.4bn ($6.26bn).

The company employs more than 19,000 people across 40 countries and is listed on Nasdaq Helsinki.
