Branding and packaging designer Daniela Barrio de Mendoza has a little thing called point of view. It’s clear from a quick scroll through her website that the Lima, Peru native who studied packaging design in Barcelona and currently lives and works in New Zealand has a spunky yet sophisticated, bold yet controlled aesthetic that’s informed by this multicultural background. She calls it “eclectic.”
“When we think about an ‘eclectic design,’ we think about texture and patterns and colors and typography all mixing together, but always cohesively with an intention and with control,” Barrio de Mendoza explains. “Because of my Latin roots, maybe, I’m explosive with colors, and I can be more chaotic, but when we talk about brands, that’s when I have to create a balance between all the elements.”
“I’m not a minimalist designer, obviously,” she adds.
