Grocery Shopping Is Now A Design Experience Thanks To MoMA Mart

Recently opened in New York City, the limited-time MoMA Mart pop-up transforms the familiar rituals of grocery shopping into a playful exploration of contemporary design, illusion, and humor.

Presented by the MoMA Design Store, MoMA Mart is not an exhibition in the traditional sense, nor a curated artwork. Instead, it is a retail experience rooted in the museum’s long-standing engagement with everyday objects. Drawing inspiration from modern and contemporary art’s fascination with food, the pop-up reimagines common grocery items as functional design objects. Visitors will find things like socks disguised as pantry staples and candles that look like fresh produce.
