Nespresso and Circular Materials launch Green Bag programme in Ontario

Nespresso Canada has collaborated with Circular Materials to debut its Green Bag recycling programme in the Canadian province of Ontario.

The programme is initially being implemented in the City of London municipality.

Introduced in 2016, the Green Bag recycling programme allows residents to recycle Nespresso capsules in their home recycling bins.

Residents can collect their used aluminium Nespresso capsules in a designated green bag, which is then placed in the recycling bin.

The programme has been established in more than 1,000 communities across Canada.

This expansion makes Ontario the sixth province to join the programme after Quebec, Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island.

Nestlé Canada, as a founding member of Circular Materials, reportedly played a crucial role in bringing the Green Bag recycling programme to London.

At Miller Waste Systems in London, a sorting centre and partner of Circular Materials, the bags are separated and sent to a Nespresso recycling partner.

The capsules undergo a mechanical process to separate the coffee grounds from the aluminium, which is then recycled, and the grounds are turned into compost, all at no extra cost to consumers or the municipality.

Nespresso Canada president Carlos Oyanguren said: “Implementing the Green Bag programme in Ontario has been a priority for Nespresso for years now – we are proud that this additional solution is brought to London, Ontario.

“Nespresso has played a key role in reducing residual materials in Canada by implementing innovative recycling solutions for over a decade now. We are confident that this collaboration with Circular Materials in Ontario will help achieve our ambitious recycling targets and we look forward to expanding this solution to other municipalities.”

In London, Nespresso Club members previously used the Red Bag system, requiring them to drop off their capsules at Canada Post locations.

With the Green Bag programme, members now have the added convenience of placing their capsules in their blue recycling bin.

In January this year, Nespresso Canada expanded its Green Bag recycling solution to all communities in the province of Prince Edward Island.
